Summer Foods

Markets are full of the fresh fruits and vegetables which are appropriate for the summer diet.  These are foods which keep us both cool and light and help to balance the fire energy of the Small Intestine and Heart.

This is the time to go light on proteins, fats and carbohydrates which are more heating in nature.  Mucus-forming foods such as meat, bread, dairy products and sugar tend to congest the energy of the Small Intestine, so these should be kept to a minimum in the diet.

The flavor associated with Fire is bitter.  An imbalance in the Fire energy may manifest as a craving or repulsion for bitter foods.  While small amounts of bitter food will strengthen the Heart and Small Intestine energy, an excess can be damaging.

For balance, a person with an excess of Fire  needs a cooling diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, diluted juice and water.

For a deficiency of Fire, a supportive diet should include more cooked and warming foods, especially whole grains.  Hot greens such as watercress, endive and cauliflower and herbs such as ginger and cayenne will also stimulate Fire.
